Test Overview

The driving practical test in the UK is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to drive safely, follow traffic regulations, and demonstrate control over the vehicle in real-world conditions. The test evaluates driving skills in different traffic scenarios to ensure the candidate is ready for independent driving.

1. Eligibility Criteria

  1. Candidates must have passed the driving theory test before booking the practical test.
  2. Minimum age requirement is 17 years (or 16 years for those receiving the enhanced mobility component of Personal Independence Payment - PIP).
  3. A provisional UK driving licence is required.

2. Test Duration and Location

  1. The practical test lasts around 40 minutes and is conducted at a DVSA test centre.
  2. The test route includes a mix of urban roads, dual carriageways, and residential areas, covering a range of driving conditions.

3. Key Components of the Test

  1. Eyesight Check – Candidates must read a vehicle number plate from 20.5m (67 feet). Failing this results in an immediate test failure.
  2. Vehicle Safety Questions ("Show Me, Tell Me") – The examiner asks one "Tell Me" question before driving and one "Show Me" question while driving, focusing on basic vehicle safety knowledge.
  3. General Driving Ability – Candidates will be assessed on their control of the vehicle, response to road signs, handling of junctions, roundabouts, and awareness of other road users.
  4. Reversing Manoeuvres – One of the following manoeuvres will be tested:
  5. Parallel parking
  6. Bay parking (either reversing in or driving in and reversing out)
  7. Pulling up on the right side of the road, reversing for two car lengths, and rejoining traffic
  8. Independent Driving – Candidates must follow sat-nav directions or road signs for 20 minutes to demonstrate their ability to drive safely without step-by-step instructions from the examiner.

  1. If successful, candidates receive a pass certificate and can apply for a full UK driving licence.
  2. If unsuccessful, they must wait at least 10 working days before booking a retest.
